The success of the film, mostly due to the on-screen chemistry between the two leads, spawned a series of sequels and led to a recent television adaptation. Above all else, the duo of Riggs and Murtaugh are as funny and enjoyable as any other included on this list, helping redefine a genre that many thought was headed for nothing more than a mediocre existence.

Reilly), as two immature forty-something men who are forced to live together as brothers after their parents marry. 7. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling – "Silence of the Lambs"

Released in 1991, "The Silence of the Lambs" features a memorable performance by Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. The iconic Lecter is not, however, the film’s central antagonist, as that honor goes to the serial killer nicknamed "Buffalo Bill." While this may be one of the most unconventional choices for an outstanding movie duo highlighted on this list, FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) and Hannibal Lecter, in fact, work together as a team in order to capture the villain.

Thepair get off to a rocky start with some chilling interactions between the two but as the film progresses, Lecter acts as a mentor figure to Starling, providing insight into the mind of the criminally insane. While not your prototypical duo, the team of Starling and Lector are an effective pair that has a knack for tracking down serial killers.

The young and enthusiastic Marty and the wacky Doc may be an unlikely duo but the pair has some great on-screen chemistryand infectious energy that elevateeach film in the trilogy to the level of instant classic. Surprisingly, Michael J. Fox was not the original actor slated for the lead role, as Eric Stoltz was cast as Marty but was removed shortly after production began. Thetwo hitmen work for notorious Los Angeles crime boss Marsellus Wallace and effectively use intimidation and the threat of violence to exert their will.

The suave and soft-spoken Vincent is contrasted by the aggressive and outspoken Jules, who has a habit of quoting the Bible before acts of extreme violence. The pair's contrasting styles complement each other well, with the simple-mindedand heroin-addicted Vincent relying on the more intelligent Jules to run the show. Over the years, we've seen dozen of actors appear alongside each other in different films. Combining repeat pairs and one-off legends, these are 21 of the most iconic duos in film history.

It's also probably why we don't complain much when there's another film starring two actors who just starred in another film.. The pair made their first film appearance together in The Devil Wears Prada , as Streep played the demanding and feared editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine with Tucci as her second-in-command.. While their first appearance in a film was technically as extras in Field of Dreams , Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were actually good friends as kids, continuing that friendship throughout their professional lives in a number of different films.. First Appearance Together: The V.I.P.s (1963). With the release of All Saints Day looming, we here at The Film Stage were left to wonder: what makes the perfect on-screen duo? Obviously, chemistry is the primary factor. But what else is there […

In an attempt to find an answer, we’ve compiled a list of the top 20 duos of all time.. Among everything else it does so well, it gave us one of the most complex duos of all time, adding a twist on the idea of a duo i.e. the duo as one person.. That is what makes them nothing but a fun team to watch.. Again, like Fight Club we see a twist put on the idea of a duo and what it means to act as a team, redefining the term “necessary evil.”. Considering one of the characters can only speak in growls it’s amazing how far they have come.. Henry Jones Sr. added a much needed back story to the character of Indy and at the same time managed to define himself and the chemistry he shared with the famous archeologist is both funny and believable.. Thesetwo, instead of out-acting each other, play off their respective timing perfectly, finding laughs where they might be harder to catch. The Butch and Sundance of the western-spoof.. A perfect duo with cheese (see the film for the correct answer).. And to think this thing was directed by a man. These two lovelies make driving off into a canyon seem almost worth it.. When the movie ends you are doing nothing but rooting for the two characters’ lives outside of the walls in which they became brothers.. Finding chemistry between two toys would appear hard enough, yet the studio managed to find it between two robots.

Wayne and Garth. Jake and Elwood. Dale and Brennan. Let's review.

But it wasn’t until a year or two later that viewers and critics alike came to see the eponymous Step Brothers for what they truly were: one of the 30 greatest fictional comedy duos ever conceived, which we’ve ranked here today for your edification.. It’s their gleeful taunts to little Kevin McCallister — shocking by today’s kid-movie standards (“Nothing would thrill me more greatly than to shoot you”) and intensified by Joe Pesci’s cinematic-gangster pedigree — that keep their booby-trap beatings fresh year after year.. While owing their origins to many other duos that came before them (looking at you, Cheech and Chong), Harold and Kumar brought the buddy comedy to a historically underserved demographic: that of Asian-Americans, who are too often typecast as studious rule followers or zany foreigners.. Misunderstanding and aggravation make for great comedy to begin with — layer on Chan’s martial arts acrobatics and Tucker’s mile-a-minute mouth and you’ve got box-office gold.. While Cheech and Chong are minting the stoner comedy genre, writer/director Walter Hill has an idea: pair a black criminal with a white cop to bring down a couple of terrible baddies.. Cut to four years later, when the ascension of Richard Pryor to superstardom has Hollywood singing a different tune about black leading players: Pryor is now too big for the role, and thus it goes (via a pass by Gregory Hines) to a television improv actor who has never made a feature film before.. In his first starring role, Chris Tucker (as Smokey) brings the bombast and Ice Cube (Craig) brings his typically laid-back demeanor, and the pair basically do nothing all day aside from banter and try to avoid a spurned drug dealer.. A single line from Smokey to Craig — “I know you don’t smoke weed, I know this; but I’m gonna get you high today, ’cause it’s Friday; you ain’t got no job … and you ain’t got shit to do.” — pretty accurately sums up the relationship in all its glory.. Bring two such men together, and they will naturally be cajoled into an endless game of juvenile one-upsmanship, bringing a wonderful comedic bent to an otherwise tragic film.. The anecdote that best sums up Chris Farley and David Spade’s friendship — and the indelible chemistry that followed, from the set of SNL to the three feature films they made together — is probably a story that happened off camera while filming Tommy Boy.. Seth’s R-rated bravado and Evan’s awkward deadpan makes for a back and forth that revealed a ridiculous but believable eye into the depraved conversations that teenage boys tend toward as they try to navigate high school’s toughest challenge: feelings.. It’s easy to forget that the two lovable cheeba hounds in Cheech and Chong’s debut feature film actually had names (Pedro De Pacas and Anthony “Man” Stoner, for anyone keeping score at home), as the longtime comedy duo’s wacky countercultural odyssey not only spawned six more movies, but made their real monikers the kind of cultural shorthand that comedy writers dream of.

Learn all about the most iconic director-composer duos in Hollywood history—how they met, how they collaborate, and whether or not they would have achieved the same level of fame and success independent of each other.

Can you imagine a world where someone other than Danny Elfman composed Tim Burton movies?. Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Hitchcock disagreed on the direction for what ended up being their final collaboration, and neither achieved the same level of success after they split ways.. Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann: Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960) James Cameron and James Horner: Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009) M. Night Shyamalan and James Newton Howard: The Sixth Sense (1999), The Village (2004) Tim Burton and Danny Elfman: Batman (1989), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Steven Spielberg and John Williams: Raiders of The Lost Ark (1981), Schindler's List (1993). No list of director-composer duos would be complete without this pair.. He'd never before felt Hitchcock restricting his artistic freedom, and in the end, Hitchcock discarded Herrmann's score, deciding that he didn't need Herrmann's input to be a success.. The most sensitive directors can be completely ignorant about the use of music, while an inferior director can have a great instinct for it—largely because film music has a certain mystical quality.. Cameron and Horner first worked together on Aliens (1986), but then they didn't collaborate again until Titanic (1997), over a decade later.. These two didn't collaborate on nearly as many films as the other director-composer duos mentioned in this article.. I will miss the collaboration.. Once again, Shyamalan and Newton Howard were on the same artistic wavelength.. Who's to say that without Newton Howard's music, Shyamalan's films would have received the same accolades?. While it is generally agreed upon that the quality of Shyamalan's films has steadily decreased since The Sixth Sense , Newton Howard has continued to compose the music for his films while also receiving accolades for separate projects (such as The Hunger Games ).. Burton and Elfman then moved on to another instant classic, Edward Scissorhands , which for Elfman again presented the intriguing artistic challenge of combining quirk; comedy; and dark, beautiful, and romantic energy.. There's no doubt that symbiotic relationships between directors and composers produce brilliant, elegantly crafted work.
